BACKGROUND In May 2025, the Fire Department (Department) presented its 2025 San José Wildfire Planning and Preparedness Study Session 1 to the Mayor and City Council, providing an overview of the City's wildfire risk, preparedness level, multi-agency coordination model, and risk reduction priorities. The presentation was prompted in part by the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires that struck Los Angeles County in January 2025. Collectively, the fires burned more than 21,000 acres, destroyed over 16,000 structures, claimed 30 lives, and heightened awareness of wildfire risk to the urban environment across the state.
